Do you want to attend a

homeschool conference?

The short answer is yes! In a few months the homeschool conference season will be upon us. And no matter what state you live in, you’re sure to have several conferences and conventions to choose from – huge regional conventions, large state curriculum fairs or more intimate retreats and conferences. With all these choices it can be easy to get overwhelmed. Here are a couple steps to make the decision easier.

Decide What Atmosphere You’re Looking For

Regional Convention – Regional conventions are usually huge in both attendees and vendors. This has both pros and cons. A huge convention is great for curriculum shopping! They also offer full schedules of speakers and workshops to encourage and educate you. You won’t be disappointed in your entertainment and vendor choices! However, there can be a down side to a convention of this size. With a thousand people milling about it can be difficult to make new friends, or even find your family in the crowd. Also, the vendors are there to sell. There’s a chance the representatives could be pushy. Lastly, with such a full schedule of speakers and workshops there is no way you can take in everything. You will have to choose what to skip.

State curriculum Fairs – Still large, but not as overwhelming as a convention, are the state gatherings. These are often backed by state homeschool organizations or co-ops. They offer a wonderful opportunity to connect with other homeschool families on a local level.  State curriculum fairs are perfect for connecting with friends or making new ones. And while you may not have as many workshop choices as a convention, you’re sure to have a large enough variety to satisfy. You also won’t find as many homeschool vendors, but again, you’ll still find a great variety. You can check ahead to see if your favorites will be there.

Conference or Retreat - These are the smallest of the homeschool gatherings. You won’t find rows and rows of vendors to peruse, but you won’t have to fight crowds either. The atmosphere at a conference or retreat is one of friendship and encouragement – a place to share and socialize with other homeschool moms. Also, conferences are usually organized around a single general theme – unschooling, burn out, utilizing social media, or publishing. You won’t find as many workshops or speakers, but if you carefully choose a conference themed around your interests, you’re sure to be satisfied with your sessions.

Once you know what atmosphere you’d prefer, it’s time to think about what your priorities.  What do you most want to achieve in attending a homeschool conference? Having a clear goal will help you narrow down your list and make the best choice for you.

Know Your Niche

Curriculum and Workshops - If your main goal is to be exposed to as many different curricula as possible, a convention is probably best for you. At a regional convention, you could spend the whole weekend simply browsing the vendor tables. Likewise, if you want to attend a plethora of workshops – especially how-to workshops – you may be most comfortable at a large convention.

Local friends and Connections – State curriculum fairs are a fun way to spend a day with a fellow homeschool mom. They are also a good opportunity to meet up with those ‘local’ families who live a bit too far away to see on a regular basis. Plus, state curriculum fairs are a fabulous resource for small, local, curriculum and field trip resources.

Networking and Encouragement – If you are looking to make connections and friends while being encouraged in a specific vein, then a conference is the best choice for you. At a conference you’ll find workshops, vendors, and speakers organized around the theme or themes which most appeal to you. Conferences are also a great opportunity for business minded homeschool moms to make connections with companies.

Whether you choose a convention, fair or conference, you’re sure to have a great time and learn a lot in the process. The important part is that you go! Expand your horizons, be encouraged, and decompress from the stresses of the school year.

Now it’s your turn! Which type of gathering do you prefer?

Nice distinctions to help families decide where to go! Please don’t forget State Conventions, which are much more than a state curriculum fair. These State Conventions can rival regional conventions in number of workshops, exhibitors, and attendees! They are typically backed by the state homeschool associations that work tirelessly year-round to protect homeschooling freedoms in their states.
